Sad Plant Surprise Box

An original Stekjes & Zo concept, back for 2026.

In 2020, we introduced our very first Sad Plant Boxes at Stekjes & Zo. The idea was simple: to give perfectly viable plants that didn’t quite meet our regular webshop standards a second chance.

After being away from our webshop for a while, the Stekjes & Zo Sad Plant Surprise Box is back.
The concept is still the same: a plant doesn’t have to look perfect to deserve a new home.

What’s inside?

For €49.99, you will receive a surprise box containing 4 plants: 3 of them are our so-called “Sad Plants”, plus at least 1 healthy, regular-quality plant with a normal retail value of €30 or more.

What is a Sad Plant?

A Sad Plant is not a plant that is dying or unlikely to survive. We only select plants that we believe have a realistic chance of continuing to grow and thrive with the right care.

They simply don’t look full, perfect or special enough at that moment to be sold among our regular plants in the webshop.

This could include:

• A plant with only a few leaves or some damaged leaves
• A plant that hasn’t grown as full or beautifully as expected
• A variegated plant showing little or currently no visible variegation
• A young variegated plant whose first leaves have emerged green, but which may still produce variegation in future growth
• A rare or normally more expensive variety that doesn’t currently meet our usual standards for regular sale
• A plant that we simply have too many of at that moment

Every Sad Plant is selected because we believe it has a realistic chance to survive and continue growing. We will not include plants that we expect are unlikely to make it.

The contents of every box are different and always a surprise. Sometimes you may receive a plant that simply needs a little extra time and care. Sometimes it could be a special variety that doesn’t quite meet our usual cosmetic standards. And sometimes, we simply have a few too many of a certain plant.

Please note that when a variegated plant currently shows little or no visible variegation, we cannot guarantee that future leaves will develop variegation again. That little element of chance is part of the Sad Plant Surprise Box.
